    Why We Love It

    • Founded by Joseph and Teresa Ahearne, El Porteño first offered their handmade empanadas at farmers markets around the Bay Area. The savory turnovers were made in small batches using recipes from Joseph's mother – who is herself una porteña, or native of Buenos Aires. The company still makes their fillings by hand and assembles each empanada individually for the perfect balance of flavors and textures. These empanadas de cordero are filled with herb-seasoned lamb braised in Malbec red wine and surrounded by a flaky, buttery crust. A side of chimichurri sauce adds tangy heat to the Argentinian treat.

    Receiving Instructions

    • Empanadas and chimichurri sauce ship frozen. Keep empanadas frozen until ready to bake; do not thaw.
    • Store unopened in freezer for up to 6 months.

    Thawing Instructions

    • To thaw chimichurri sauce, place sealed plastic bag in bowl of hot water (140°F) for 5–10 minutes, or until it can be broken into pieces.

    Preparation Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 400°F.
    • Space frozen empanadas 1" apart on baking sheet lightly greased or lined with parchment paper.
    • Brush empanadas with egg wash and lightly sprinkle with sea salt.
    • Bake 15–20 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 165°F.
    • Serve warm with side of chimichurri sauce or fresh green salad.
    • Slice empanadas into halves or quarters for easy sharing at gatherings or events.
    • Pairs with full-bodied, savory red wines, particularly Malbec, or full-bodied beers.
    • Filling: Lamb (domestic, shoulder, arm, separable lean only, trimmed to 1/4" fat, choice, raw), onion, red wine, tomato paste, garlic, salt, basil, oregano, parsley, spice.
